But seriously, this is how much we should be protecting ourselves from the sun.
Cinco de Mayo is Sunday. If you’re like us, you will be enjoying the gorgeous day at a patio or rooftop bar eating chips and salsa and drinking micheladas.
Two major points to slow the aging process this Sunday and every day thereafter. Stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun! UV rays cause premature aging, wrinkles and skin damage that can lead to more serious illnesses.
We don’t want to rain on the sun parade, but we do want to make sure our amazing readers are protecting their skin and hair.
With Spring and Summer comes more sunny days out on a duffy, paddleboard or rooftop where we are more exposed to UV rays. It is not news that SPF is mandatory to protect your skin, but what about your hair?
To accurately deliver why sunscreen for the hair is so important, here is a quick breakdown.
Sun Rays Cause Drying And Damage to the Hair Strand
UV rays deplete hair protein which gives the hair its strength and structure. TMI…If your hair has prolonged exposure to the sun, UVA and UVB rays can damage the outside cover of the hair strand, aka the cuticle. Signs of sun damage to your hair include discoloration, dry and brittle strands, broken or split ends, thinning and frizziness. Eweh!
It Fades Your Color Faster
That’s right…wondering why your color seems to turn yellow or brassy so fast? That is because the sun acts as a catalyst, much like peroxide, bleach or a heat lamp at the hair salon, for opening your cuticle which in turn allows your hair color to slide right out. Not only do UV rays take color out of your hair, but it takes money out of your pocket as you will need to be in for toners and lowlights much more often.
Save your skin, hair and money by using an SPF daily. Here are some more habits that are imperative to keeping you looking young longer:

3. Do deep conditioning treatments once per week. Dehydration leads to premature aging as well. So while you are drinking a glass of water between each Sunday mimosa to protect your skin and keep your wits, remember your hair needs hydration to stay young as well. A weekly treatment doesn’t have to be as dramatic as it sounds. No need to wrap conditioner and saran wrap on your head and watch TV for 30 minutes. 😂 Although why not?
Shampoo with a clarifying shampoo, like Davines Solu Shampoo, then apply a treatment, like Saphira Mineral Mud, to your mid-shaft and ends. No need to put it on your scalp. Your hair get’s enough moisture from your natural oils (also known as Sebum).

Have a hard time sitting still for 5-10 minutes? Apply it to your hair then braid it before a work out or sleep with it on. NO harm in leaving it on over 10 minutes, but remember to rinse it out before attempting to style it. I love to throw conditioner in my hair then top bun it pre-hot yoga. The room’s heat steams that conditioner right into my hair. Yum! This also will help dilute the salt that comes from your sweat.
